A crazy few months

Apologies for the lack of recent posts (I think you’ll forgive me in just a moment). I’ve had a crazy few months, but here’s what I’ve been up to, with links for stuff that you can pre-order and download!

Finished the draft of my second book, with my coworkers Jamie Taylor and Colin Evans. It’s called “Programming the Semantic Web” and it’s already listed in Amazon (the description there right now will be changed, trust me)
Working on collecting and editing essays for what will be a great collection, called Beautiful Data. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to tell you who the contributors are yet, but I will say they’re fantastic and we were very lucky to get them.
I gave a 3-hour workshop and a 40-minute session talk at Webstock which was held in Wellington, New Zealand a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing experience and warrants a whole post on its own. For now, the slides for both sessions are available as PDFs at http://kiwitobes.com/webstock/

And coming up, there’s still more stuff going on:

I’m giving a talk at ETech on March 10th. It’s about the failure of risk rating agencies and ideas for how the tech community can help
I’ll also be at Web 2.0 Expo giving another talk on Sources for Data Geeks on April 2nd
And I’m getting married on July 4th!

(because a lot of people ask me, the answer is: no, conference speaking is not even slightly lucrative. I do it for fun)

I very briefly flipped through your slides and they look interesting. I will have a closer loot at it at some point, when I have a bit more time (read: not between breakfast and time to leave for work). However, maybe I should do it at work though as I see many things related to what I am doing: building a business intelligence solution. That is also exactly the reason why I leave a comment since I would suggest that you have a quick look at QlikView (www.qliktech.com), which is the BI tool that we are using. They have a 14-day free trail download available on their website and this is really worth a little play. I think that this might be a very accessible tool for a wider audience to use the concepts you are discussing in your books (however, never really managed to create any self learning solutions within the software).

Hey Toby,

I hope you can post the slides from your March 10 talk. There’s so much available and potentially useful information that is not being incorporated into credit assessments. Borrowers and intermediaries have built-in conflicts, and the rating agencies are joined to the borrowers. An upside to this crisis is that market participants will (or should) be more willing to pay attention to approaches like yours.

I’m such a fan. Collective Intelligence has something for everyone - dilettantes like me, hard-core Python folks, and fans of “the big idea.” It’s my favorite tech book. Please come to New York more often.
