Walmart Growth Video

The other day at work, I made this video showing the opening of Wal-mart retail locations over time. It’s pretty fun to watch how it starts very slowly with the first location in Arkansas in 1962 and then spreads into different regions over time.

(you can download a high-resolution AVI version here)

It actually is built entirely from data that’s in Freebase, including the map itself.

Here’s how it works:

Freebase has a topic for every zip code, along with it’s longitude and latitude. Here’s one example. One query pulls out all the ZIP codes along with their longitudes and latitudes. You can turn longitudes and latitudes into graphical coordinates with some simple transformations (which will vary based on the region you’re plotting and how big your image is) — here are the ones I used:

x=(longitude+127)*16
y=(50-latitude)*20

If you plot all the ZIP codes using a library like PIL, you get a nice map with dots that roughly match population density, which has the advantage of looking a little bit like a night-time satellite photo of the United States.

Freebase also contains a list of Wal-mart locations, along with their addresses and the year that they opened. Here’s an example. One query pulls all of these out of Freebase.

To create the animation, I generated 30 images for each year starting with 1962. I spread all the Wal-marts that opened that year over the 30 frames. To show the appearance of a Wal-mart, all I had to do was plot a large white dot over the small yellow dot for the appropriate ZIP code. I turned the 1380 images into an animation using MEncoder.

I’ve had a lot of suggestions for how to improve this, perhaps also showing ZIP code median income or overlay the spread of Starbucks at the same time. We’re trying to build a massive store of interconnected public data, so there are many many possibilities for visualizations. So, what would you guys like to see?

Update: I’m getting a lot of traffic right now for this post, the site was down for a while, but seems to be working now. Those who like fun data analysis might also be interested in my craigslist w4m city analysis.

How about showing market penetration for various competitors within an industry? For instance, Blimpies as red dots, Subway in blue, and Togo’s in yellow. It may be a bit more static (I don’t see any dates on these chains), but even a snapshot of current locations could be interesting.

Great job. This could be the ultimate visualization of “the malling of America” if you could plot, against it, the closing of Kmart stores–almost always in the same or next town as opening of a Wal-Mart, which leaves a dead building and crumbling parking lot. Even better, if you could plot, against it, the closing of nearby downtown hardware stores, frame shops, and clothing stores. You could also consider plotting average wages for the towns nearest the Wal-Marts–they typically go down, driven by the volume of low-pay jobs Wal-Mart offers. btw, Kenneth E. Stone of Iowa State is probably the leading authority on Wal-Mart’s effects on nearby towns.

When someone mentioned they had bought the game they were calling about at Wal-mart, I hadn’t heard of it and mentioned it to the caller. They were flabbergasted and wondered how I could survive.

Wal-Mart can only put local small business out of business if people shop at Wal-Mart, so it’s not Wal-Mart’s fault it’s the local population. If you don’t like Wal-Mart don’t work or shop there, it’s a free market, meaning that if Wal-Mart doesn’t have employees or customers, they will be out too. All these small businesses had an opportunity to grow just like Wal-Mart did. Interesting video too, very nice.

I am truly amazed that this very interesting video can quickly become a reason for people to bash something they no little or nothing about. I have worked for Wal-Mart for 5 years and have found it to be a very good company for its customers, associates and the American economy. Alan Greenspan once said Wal-Mart has kept inflation in check. I read today that the only store we have in the City of Chicago has an average wage of $12/hour and if I recall properly there were over 4,000 applicants for the 400 available jobs. Lastly there are many studies that show local business increases with the opening of a new Wal-Mart store. Some of you may not believe this, but then it is easier to comment than to create.

If you have not already heard, Walmart has decided to take $470,000 from Debbie Shank, a 52 year old mother of three (One of her sons recently died in Iraq), who was involved in a terrible car accident crippling her short term memory, leaving her in a wheelchair, and in a nursing home.

Because of the fine print of Walmarts health insurance plan, since Debbie was involved in a car accident and was awarded the money to take care of the tragic aftermath, they are entitled to take all the money that was supposed to go to taking care of Debbie.

THEY ACTUALLY WANT $470,000 from this handicapped woman in a wheelchair, who needs it to be taken care of in the future. This coming from a company that made $90 billion last quarter…

Also for you employees that work for them, how do you survive on $5.25 an hour? How do you have health insurance? By going on public assistance so that we tax-payers can foot the bill, while Wal-Mart makes billions in profits. More Corporate welfare.

You have drunk the kool-aid and you need to stop. We do not need all that crap they sell. Go to your local trift store, you would be amazed what people throw away, often with tags still on it.

As far as buying Wal-mart’s food, I will become a freegan first and go dumpster diving first then shop at a company that screws you and doesn’t even kiss you…

It looks like something the CDC could put out - tracking the spread of a flu virus - the spread of some horrible disease - but no, it’s just the spread of one hideous junk-filled ’shop’ after another!

Never realized just how money-hungry my relatives and friends could be, but they all just flocked to Wal-Mart stores. But heck, they were just playing follow the leader/s! Nice to see how it has all backfired on the American public, trying to get more for less (never mind that you were helping to put your fellows out of work - that was their problem - you wanted those ’savings’).

Has anyone noticed, along with not only the spread of the Wal-Marts, but the Targets, Kohl’s, Starbucks, etc., etc., how very few American dress with anything resembling real class? Way too many Americans go out in public fat, dumpy, shlumpy looking, with any old ‘pants and tops’ and think somehow that it’s ok to come into restaurants, shops, even churches! looking the way they do - to say nothing of the huge rolls of fat coming out of tight fitting ’stretch’ pants, bare midriffs, OH PLEASE, SAVE US FROM THAT THIS SUMMER!

Our poor country! And we’ve done it to ourselves!

Walmart is like a cancer, it will kill over time. The only ones making money are the owners supported by our political elite. We stupid Customers just don’t get it. Money saving for what. You get what you paid for - cheap stuff.
Made in China. Local business can never aquire the same products for a price like Walmart as they don’t have the resources to import from directly China. Further Walmart is still getting too many sweetheart deals from our politicians. Our manufacturing base is gone as we Americans decided it’s fashionable to buy foreign products. - quality does not matter - it’s important that it is cheap.
Not all Americans think that way they are in the minority, but it’s the reason, businesses like Walmart can grow.

What do you think causes the low wage earners in the first place? Displaced workers whose jobs lef the country for Asia and Central America perhaps? Union workers displaced by non-union or slave labor elsewhere? Part of our “grim economic outlook” is caused by our trade deficit with China, and WalMart is a big part of China’s sales department.

ok - cheap labor to peddle cheap junk - walmart heirs - minus now the matriarch - worth at least $50BILLION - EACH

yet they still demand $27MILLION taxpayer subsidy to pave entrance to bentonville ar hq

then demand year on year price reductions from suppliers

    control 260+ factories in china

and lobbied chinese government to BACK OFF addressing workers rights grievances - by chinese workers

walmart DOES NOT HAVE the lowest prices - the majority of the time - their “loss leaders” - in the ads - at the end of the aisle - lack features most would want in a product - then - shoppers gravitate down the aisle for pricier products than would be available - say at a k-mart - another big box - and i don’t know k-mart’s labor report card - but it’s not complete decimation of the wage earning class

but folks who love wal-mart will love the rest of the rebulican - ronald reagan voodoo trickle down haves & have mores now housing bust that’ll leave them scouring walmart dumpsters for throwaways -

because dubbya talks trash and is the kind of gut you’d love to have a beer with -

while you’re greeting those walmart shoppers - think about scrounging for living through your seventies - as your feudal masters intimidate you to organize and send you to the social services for basic necessities

as for the prescription subsidies - i don’t want a for profit corporation subsidizing healthcare - when the medicar program - paid by taxpayers - cannot negotiate price with big pharma -

folks - not much difference between the egyptian slaves that built the pyramids and what today resembles not an ant of the used-to-be working class -

and the friggin 100,000+ plus sq ft buildings they leave littering the landscape

been to a walmart a couple of times - then right over to loacal supemarket and picked EXACT same items at SAME or lower prices - same on consumer goods -

just because they painete loews prices ever on all their trucks - doesn’t mean they are -

but - hey - the money ya thing your’e saving at walmart wioll be of good use once the full impact of the housing bubble starts hitting your take home pay - brought to you by the same neo libearl corporate fanatics –

hey - have pretzel - hell - just move your family in a walmart - sleep in the back - work all day and never leave - might be cheaper on the normal rest of society…

I for one think this is a great example of free enterprise. Something the Democrat candidates absolutely hate. The only way Wal-Mart, or any company for that matter can expand is if people shop and buy from them. Simple as that. Wal-Mart is not the only company that has expanded in recent decades. Just open you eyes and look around. I see mom and pop stores in every place Wal-Mart is located and they are doing great. Some go under sure, but in business stores go under all the time, mostly due to poor management, not completion.
As for the Debbie Shanks story, that is tragic. Even though Wal-Mart had the legal right, even according to the highest courts in the Nation to go after the money, they have decided not to pursue it. Case closed, so don’t let someone sending you an e-mail asking to donate to a fund. Check it out thoroughly first. Only took me a few minutes to come to the truth and the resolution. I have worked in insurance before and know full well what the terms are in certain policies. Get a big corporation involved and get clerks that are just pushing paper and a lot can go wrong. Not just with Wal-Mart but others too. At least Wal-Mart did the right thing and rethought their position and will leave the money alone, even though it is legally theirs.
Wal-Mart contributes more to charity and such than almost any other company. Let Target throw the Salvation Army off their lots, but Wal-Mart will continue to let them in. Also Wal-Mart has backed off their support of the Lesbian and Gay Alliance. Why? Because the public complained. If you don’t like Wal-Mart and want to listen to the lies that these Democrat candidates are telling you, then fine. Don’t shop there. Nobody is making you. If you want to turn this country into a communist nation, then fine. Elect Hillary or Obama, because that is where they will take us. Read what they are saying for crying out loud. Universal Health Care? Look at the Nations that have it. People wait and die waiting for Dr. Appt. and surgeries. We have the best in the world because the free market regulates it. If you want “womb to the tomb” care from the Federal Government, then by all means, elect those clowns. As for me, give me freedom, but you are not going to take away my rights.

Interesting…..I once tried to see for myself, what kind of pay and benefit package Walmart provided for it’s workers. I applied on line for a job and asked about the benefits. The person emailed me back and said the pay “varied.” I then asked about insurance. I was told that insurance was “available.” I then asked for an explanation of what was available and at what cost? I never received a reply, although I requested further information several times.
Truth is, only a select few can actually afford the insurance and the wages cannot support a livable wage to the average worker. Therefore, the folks that have always paid the way (middle class) end up subsidizing the medical benefits and housing for those that cannot earn enough to support themselves.
I do not shop at Walmart and never will. I also buy American products and local products every possible chance I get. Check out www.howtobuyamerican.com if you are interested in doing the same.

There is alot wrong with wal-mart, it abuses and underpays its hourly workers. There are no benefits unless they buy them and on the starvation wages no one can afford them. Monopolies hurt everyone. Are the prices really low when you have to turn around and buy one so soon because it wore out so soon or didn’t work. Because of the demand for cheap goods and cheap wages all our jobs are going over seas. Wake up people we depend on china and Wal-Mart for our economy. They own us. Working for Wal-Mart is working for china and under similiar conditions. Wal-Mart is driven by endless greed and will shave off every nickel and penny it can take from their workers paychecks. They use up their workers and spit them out like toliet paper to get government hiring incentives, so our government is subsidising their labor. Thanks for supporting china a government that opposes our freedoms. Leave it to the United States to support everyone else but our own way of life. China is growing rich and developing we on the other hand are losing our freedoms and decaying. China owns you. Try working at wal-mart and see if you have any freedoms, any way to pay rent or own a car or buy food or have a weekend or a holiday or a vacation or any number of things that most workers take for granted. Wal-Mart employees were bait and switched when it came to benefits. They are the working poor:Sad in a country which is supposed to be wealthy. Go in a Wal-mart sometime and look at the workers teeth, how many couldn’t afford dental care and are missing teeth. Look at their shoes, how many have holes in them. How many are bone thin, for lack of nutrition? How many work through injuries and never get to see a doctor! Anyone who says different is a liar and doesn’t know what they are talking about. Go work there even for one day, most on average don’t last past three weeks. It is that bad.

I forgot to mention a co-worker who had cancer, he was on death’s door from his illness, frail, emanciated, sickly, lost all color and was losing mental capacity. He worked up until his dying day because he had a son at home to provide for. Did wal-mat dip into their billions so that their worker of ten years could die in dignity at home. They had the dying man working for a few bucks in his last hours. He was in pain, riddled with cancer, and saving you money so you could live better! The man should have been in a hospitol and on paid leave. Wal-Mart drove out businesses that real Americans used to own, they are never coming back. We used to make our own goods, they are never coming back. Wal-Mart is making up its own laws and rules and workers rights are never coming back. Greed is ruler and compassion is never coming back. Wal-Mart teaches us to value objects and not people. Continue to shop there and you are supporting suffering, poverty, and the abuse of your fellow citizens. There is only one store in my neighborhood, one, that makes wal-mart a monopoly. Poverty, mistreatment, and abuse of workers is not a success story unless you are the devil.

I would love to see another video with wal-mart’s interaction with other businesses… make a list of all businesses whose doors have been closed due to a wal-mart takeover of the town… show those on a map in blue dots, and then show the white dot wal-marts taking over… hahaha… that would be awesome.
